Derek de LaatPresident

Derek de Laat is the president of FIN IP Group. Mr. de Laat’s career has been focused on bringing credible and advanced financial services to the IP market. He has developed over 500 patent acquisition models, supported deals in excess of $2 billion, and helped raise patent portfolio and litigation financing in excess of $200 million. With more than a decade of experience, Mr. de Laat has structured various IP transactions, developed industry-leading financial models, and played a key role in major IP licensing deals spanning multiple technologies.

Recognized globally for his expertise, Mr. de Laat has been named one of the world’ leading 300 IP strategists (IAM300) for five consecutive years (2019-2023). He has also been selected as an IAM Global Leader for 2024, part of an exclusive group driving strategies that maximize the value of IP portfolios.

Prior to founding FIN IP Group, Mr. de Laat served as Vice President of IP Investments & Valuation at WiLAN, a renowned patent licensing company, where he oversaw financial strategies for licensing and acquisitions. Earlier in his career, he held key roles at BlackBerry and Rockstar Consortium, contributing significantly to the monetization and licensing of their patent portfolios.

Mr. de Laat holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Erasmus University (Rotterdam School of Management), and an MBA in Finance from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) and a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA). He has also taught Business Decision Modeling and Valuation part-time at Carleton University.

 
Julian Cupillari Senior Director

Julian Cupillari, Senior Director at FIN IP Group, has been an integral part of the company since its inception. With deep dedication to client service, Mr. Cupillari specializes in financial modeling and developing royalty rates for intellectual property.

With nearly a decade of experience in financial modeling and analysis, he has crafted complex financial models for international organizations across sectors such as hospitality, education, technology, and healthcare. In 2016, he played a pivotal role in the US$3 billion acquisition of FRHI Hotels & Resorts by AccorHotels. He earned the Advanced Financial Modeling (AFM) accreditation in 2019, further validating his expertise.

Before joining FIN IP Group, Mr. Cupillari served as Director of Business Development at the Financial Modeling Institute (FMI), where he led the Business Development team, provided strategic guidance and oversaw the development of new offerings. He also built and nurtured partnerships with top universities, business schools, professional accreditation organizations, and corporate teams.

Mr. Cupillari holds an Honours in Business Administration from Western University (Richard Ivey School of Business) and a Master’s in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Queen’ University (Smith School of Business). He is also a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA) and Certified Licensing Professional (CLP).

 
Allisha LinManager

Allisha Lin, Manager at FIN IP Group, specializes in royalty rate analysis, and combines her expertise in financial modeling, precise valuations, and market-specific insights to help clients navigate licensing and monetization opportunities. Allisha’s work focuses on analyzing industry-specific royalty benchmarks, building detailed financial models, and delivering actionable recommendations that align with client objectives.

Prior to joining FIN IP Group, Allisha worked as a Data Analyst at Employment and Social Development Canada, where she developed robust analytical models, streamlined data visualizations, and transformed complex datasets into clear, actionable insights.

Allisha holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a specialization in Finance from Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business.

 
Ethan Hennigar Manager

Ethan Hennigar, a Manager at FIN IP Group, specializes in market research and due diligence. His proficiency in financial modeling techniques enables him to create detailed valuation models and company-level financial analyses for our clients.

Previously, Ethan served as a Sector Manager for the Sprott Investment Fund, where he managed a portfolio exceeding $2 million of AUM, maximizing return on investment through detailed valuation models and research.

Ethan holds the Advanced Financial Modeling (AFM) designation from the Financial Modeling Institute and a Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in Accounting and Finance from Carleton University.

 
Deepro Sengupta Senior Financial Analyst

Deepro Sengupta, Senior Financial Analyst at FIN IP Group, specializes in financial modeling, research and data analytics. He is also a skilled Python programmer with expertise in data science and machine learning.

Prior to joining FIN IP Group, Deepro applied his skills in both government and private sectors. He served as a Research Assistant for the West Bengal Accelerated Development of Minor Irrigation Project (World Bank) and at the A.K Dasgupta Centre for Development & Planning, where he built sophisticated predictive models and developed data visualizations. Additionally, as a Business Analyst at Tata Asset Management Limited, Deepro collaborated with fund managers to build macroeconomic models and back-test investment strategies for optimization.

Deepro holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Economics and a Master of Economics from Visva Bharati University, as well as an MBA in Business Analytics from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business). He also holds an Advanced Financial Modeling (AFM) designation from the Financial Modeling Institute.

 
Liam CabralSenior Financial Analyst

Liam Cabral, a Senior Financial Analyst at FIN IP Group, specializes in reasonable royalty rate analysis, market research, and financial modeling. Liam brings strong financial and leadership experience to the team.

Prior to joining FIN IP Group, Liam held a management-level role in the finance department at one of Ottawa’s largest mechanical contractors. In this role, he leveraged his research and analytics skills to forecast material, labor, and commodity prices for contracts exceeding $10 million within the commercial real estate sector.

Liam holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Finance and a Master of Finance degree from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business). He is the co-founder and inaugural President of the Sprott Master of Finance Society where he leads a team of 11 executives in hosting networking, educational, and social events for students and local professionals. Liam has also passed the CFA Level I exam and is currently a Level II candidate.

 
Daniel CheungSenior Financial Analyst

Daniel Cheung, a Senior Financial Analyst at FIN IP Group, specializes in building complex financial models, conducting in-depth financial and market research, and incorporating statistics and data science into client projects.

Daniel began his finance education in high school, creating portfolio trackers and conducting statistical analyses on the relationship between stock characteristics and future returns. In university, he researched and developed futures trading algorithms and continued investigating predictive models for stock prices. This hands-on experience, coupled with countless hours studying financial markets, has given him a deep understanding of finance theory, due diligence, and valuation. In addition, Daniel serves as Portfolio Manager for the Sprott Student Investment Fund, where he oversees $2 million in real assets.

He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce with a concentration in finance from Carleton University (Sprott School of Business).
